A fog-prone river town in late autumn, divided by both a river and its own history. The riverside district remembers itself out loud; the newer hillside mostly doesn't have to.
Miller Street Bridge
Halloway's physical and emotional crossing point, linking the riverside district to the hillside above. Ren crosses it every morning on the way to school — and it's the first place the sky ever showed him something no one else could see.
14 Hollow Lane
Ren and Elena's narrow home: a leaning porch, a fish-shaped mailbox, and a fireplace that hasn't been used in years. Elias's photograph still hangs on the wall.
Grandma Odessa's Kitchen
Family sanctuary and oral archive. Cast iron, church fans, hymns, and photographs with names nobody quite explains anymore.
The Blue Kettle
The diner where Elena works, overlooking the river. Its neon sign blinks blue, then dark, on a schedule only Ren seems to be counting.
Cutz & Convo
The neighborhood barbershop — and, unofficially, Halloway's most reliable information network. Rumor and careful observation share the same chairs.
Mount Zion AME
The riverside district's church and community anchor: music, mutual aid, and a congregation that has kept its own memory for generations.
Halloway Elementary
Red stone, a motto carved deep enough to survive the weather — WHAT WE KEEP, KEEPS US — and adults doing their best to translate a strange child into ordinary school procedure.
Vale Exchange
A cramped resale and repair shop uphill. Mr. Silas Vale is charming, careful, and always willing to make an offer on something you probably shouldn't sell.
Halloway keeps more of its own history than it lets on. Some of what's true about this town isn't revealed until later in the series — the Codex will grow as the books do.
