A Sky Only He Can See
Scroll slowly. Halloway keeps its secrets between the frames.
Monday · 7:42 a.m.
On the last Monday of October, the sky above Halloway had three cracks in it.

One.
Two.
Three.
Nine-year-old Toren Kade adjusted his glasses and counted again. The pale blue lines were too straight for lightning and too still for airplane trails.
She looked seriously anyway. That was one reason she was his best friend.
Knowing usually made the world quieter.
Today, it did not.

Halloway Elementary · afternoon
At the edge of the schoolyard, Ren drew the impossible pattern in his father’s notebook. A graphite line glimmered gold—then became ordinary again.
Dax reached for the notebook. Ren held it against his chest.
Then Dax shoved him—and the world missed a step.

The schoolyard opened.
Gold and sapphire planes unfolded through the playground. The fence became a song of bright vertical threads. Every movement divided into possibilities, and beneath matter Ren saw the rules that allowed the world to hold its shape.
Inside every person was something the geometry could touch but not contain. A presence. A choice. A door that belonged to them.
A black line appeared beneath Dax’s foot. Ren knew exactly where to press. No guessing. No embarrassment. No waiting for an adult who had not been watching.

“Ren, look at me!”
Mira’s yellow coat was the only color that belonged entirely to the ordinary world.
The impossible geometry folded shut. Ren hit the ground. A hairline crack crossed the blacktop between him and Dax.
Ren believed her—until he looked beyond the fence.

A man in a charcoal coat watched from beneath the sycamores.
At his collar, a round brass pin caught the weak daylight like a coin. He had the exhausted stillness of someone who had been waiting a very long time.
Ren blinked.
The man was gone.

That night
An older boy stood on a plain of turning gold. He had Ren’s face, sharpened by years, and an eye burning with every color at once.
His voice was kind.
His shadow was not.
The opening ends here. Ren’s story does not.
