Toren "Ren" Kade

Nine years old, sharp with numbers, and never without his notebook. Ren has always noticed patterns other people miss — which floorboard creaks, which sign will fail, which building remembers what happened inside it.

On the last Monday of October, he sees three cracks in the sky above Halloway. No one else can. It's the first sign that what Ren knows is about to become a great deal harder to carry.
